Handelsblatt: Who Is Afraid of Thinking Machines?
An article published in the German daily Handelsblatt quoted Arago Director of Technology Research René Büst. The piece reflects on Elon Musk’s recent quote regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Against the backdrop of a phenomenally fast advancing AI technology, the founder of Tesla had expressed his concern over potentially dangerous consequences for humans in the future and, somewhat surprisingly, urged for stronger government regulatory regimes.
However, IT experts challenge Musk’s statement, among them René Büst who voiced disbelief in a super-AI-intelligence with the potential to put civilization at stake. Büst says: “Just try and have a simple conversation with Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri”, thus illustrating the current state of technology.
Though the article underlines AI’s and particularly the machine learning technology’s fast development, citing examples enabling driverless mobility or the AlphaGo program, Büst points out that there is still a long way to go for future research and development.
All in all, recent AI improvements seem to yield both opportunities and threats. Therefore stronger government regulation of the technology’s framework conditions should indeed be carefully considered – not only in the US.
